Meet Kalyan S D - EHSS Manager Driving Sustainability at Incap India
Meet Kalyan S D, the EHSS (Environmental Health, Safety, and Security) Manager at Incap India. Kalyan joined our team in May 2022 and has been a driving force behind the organisation’s sustainability initiatives. In a recent interview, Kalyan discussed his key responsibilities, the challenges faced in implementing sustainability initiatives by Incap, and the notable achievements that Incap India has accomplished over the past few years.
What are your main responsibilities as an EHSS Manager?
My core responsibilities as an EHSS Manager include conducting safety audits, investigating accidents, developing safety programs, training employees on safety procedures, enforcing safety and environment regulations, monitoring compliance with safety and environment standards, establishing and implementing injury prevention / elimination programs. I am also responsible for conducting risk assessment, risk management, change management, establishing, implementing and maintaining ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) and ISO 14001:2015 (Environment Management System). Moreover, I ensure employee engagement towards occupational health, safety, and environment, enact policies and procedures to ensure environmental and social responsibilities, educate stakeholders about sustainable management practices, and improve Incap’s corporate reputation.
Which sustainability initiatives has Incap India implemented in recent years?
I joined the organisation in May 2022 and most of the initiatives were already taken up by the Plant Maintenance Department (PMD). I have ensured the prompt maintenance and sustainability in coordination with the Plant Maintenance Department (PMD), which has resulted in Incap India receiving the OHSSAI award. In the past 2-3 years the PMD has taken several initiatives, such as reusing waste pallets for packing finished goods, fitting all taps with flow control devices to reduce water flow, replacing sodium vapour and tube lights with LED lights for energy conservation, plantation of saplings for greenery development, and having a zero discharge Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that has a chemical free process.
Have you faced any challenges while implementing sustainability initiatives?
Implementing sustainability initiatives doesn’t come without its obstacles. The PMD implementation team faced the challenge of instilling sensitivity towards environmental protection among newly hired trainees. To overcome this, I have been engaging with shop floor personnel on a regular basis, trying to raise their awareness and sensitivity towards the environment. Additionally, I have taken steps to educate new hires by including classes on EHS during induction training.
How do you track and measure sustainability performance at Incap India and what metrics are used to evaluate progress?
We consider sustainability as a critical aspect of our operations, and we track and evaluate our sustainability performance regularly. We measure Incap India’s sustainability performance by evaluating various metrics, including cost, water savings (in Kiloliters), and energy savings (in KW). By monitoring these metrics, we can evaluate the effectiveness of our sustainability initiatives and identify areas where it needs improvement. Our focus on sustainability not only helps us to reduce costs and conserve resources but also demonstrates Incap’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Looking forward, what are some key sustainability goals that Incap India is working towards achieving in the near future?
In the near future we aim to reduce scrap material during production, engage employees to be more environmentally conscious, increase sapling plantation, and install solar lights along the premises in coordination with PMD. Additionally, we plan to have a rooftop solar power generation plant, which will be cost-effective and energy-conserving for the new building under construction.
