Incap US is transforming waste management
Incap US has undertaken significant efforts to improve its waste management practices, focusing on addressing gaps in recycling processes and implementing changes to reduce landfill waste.
In late 2023, an evaluation of waste disposal systems revealed that none of the four dumpsters on-site were being recycled, contrary to previous assumptions. All waste was being sent to landfills, prompting the company to take action to align its practices with sustainability goals.
The first step involved assessing the internal setup of the facility. It became clear that the production floor, which generates approximately 95% of recyclable material, had minimal or no recycling bins. In response, the team replaced garbage bins with recycling bins across the production floor. This change was further supported by detailed charts placed near receptacles, outlining recyclable and non-recyclable materials to make the process clearer and more accessible.
The impact of these changes was apparent within a short time. By November 2023, one of the four landfill dumpsters was converted to a recycling dumpster. This progress continued, and by June 2024, three out of six dumpsters were designated for recycling. Currently, the site operates with two landfill dumpsters and four recycling dumpsters, reflecting a 50% reduction in landfill waste.
Timeline of Progress
- October 2023: 4 landfill dumpsters, 0 recycling dumpsters
- November 2023: 3 landfill dumpsters, 1 recycling dumpster
- April 2024: 3 landfill dumpsters, 2 recycling dumpsters
- June 2024: 2 landfill dumpsters, 3 recycling dumpsters
- Current: 2 landfill dumpsters, 4 recycling dumpsters
While progress has been made in reducing landfill waste, challenges remain in collecting accurate recycling data. The company aims to improve tracking processes to evaluate the impact of its efforts better and plans to scale up sustainability initiatives in the future.
